United Way Offers Free Tax Preparation Services

United Way’s VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program will offer free tax preparation and e-filing services to individuals and families who had an annual household income at or below $56,000 in 2019.  VITA volunteer tax preparers are certified by the IRS to ensure that clients receive all eligible Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC) and Child Tax Credits. In addition, clients save money by not having to pay fees associated with tax preparation.

Through the VITA free tax prep program, United Way helps hard-working individuals and families in our community take advantage of their tax dollars and reinvest their returns back into Southwestern Indiana.  Last year, 1,060 tax returns were filed through United Way’s VITA program, generating over $1.4 million in state and federal refunds.  Many clients used their tax refunds to pay bills, add to their savings accounts, purchase homes, and make home or car repairs.

The VITA program depends heavily on a group of local volunteers who donate their time during tax season. Last year, 45 volunteers donated 1,505 hours of service with the VITA program.
