National Law Firm comes to Evansville

The combination connects Bingham Greenebaum Doll’s Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio practice with Dentons, the largest law firm in the world.

Bingham Greenebaum Doll (BGD), which has a large office in Evansville, announced today that the firm is combining with Dentons, the world’s largest law firm.

“At BGD, we have always served clients in the communities where we live and work,” said Reed Schmitt, Managing Partner of BGD’s Evansville office. “When we evaluated this opportunity to combine with Dentons, we looked closely at their values and found that they share our commitment to being in and of the communities they serve, which is an excellent fit for BGD. Evansville is a vibrant, growing market and this is an incredible opportunity to connect our clients to a national and global platform, with partners we trust to provide the best possible service to our clients in a variety of practice areas. We are excited to join the Dentons platform, and to take part in a combination that allows us to retain local autonomy of rates and relationships.”

“The combination will allow us to connect our clients to the very best talent across the country and around the world,” said Jeff McKenzie, Partnership Board Chair of BGD. “The combined firm will have coverage in 33 US markets, including nine of the 10 largest markets in the country, and 181 offices throughout the globe.”

“Our firm has helped clients close deals, manage risks, and open doors to new opportunities for more than 100 years,” said Bill Kaiser, Managing Partner of BGD’s Jasper office. “Through this combination, we have ensured that we can continue serving our clients for the next 100 years, both here at home and anywhere their business takes them.”

Schmitt said the rate structure for BGD clients will remain intact, as BGD will have local autonomy of client rates and relationships. Through the combination, clients will continue to benefit from Midwest cost structures. When clients need work done in Chicago, New York, Munich, or elsewhere, the combined firm can get that done at a price point that’s competitive for the market and practice area. This reduces the number of firms and contract attorneys that clients must manage and streamlines legal services through Dentons.

“Our energy group has worked on many sophisticated transactions and handled complex litigation matters for many national energy producers and lenders,” said John Rhine, Chair of the Energy Group at BGD. “We understand the expanding scope of services that our clients will need in a global marketplace, and we are pleased to bring the depth and breadth of Dentons to our clients.”

The combination is part of a broader deal that includes Pittsburgh-based law firm Cohen & Grigsby and employs a model that will enable the firms to build the first national US law firm. Currently, no law firm has offices in all 20 of the largest US legal markets.

The combined firm will have a headcount of nearly 1,100 lawyers, making it the sixth largest law firm in the US. Globally, Dentons has more than 10,000 attorneys in 70 countries around the world.  Toby McClamroch will serve as Managing Partner of Dentons Bingham Greenebaum, which includes the six offices of BGD.

The firms call this model “Golden Spike” in honor of the celebratory railroad spike that 150 years ago completed the first transcontinental railroad in the US and united the Nation in commerce.

“Clients want to work with a firm that can support the wide variety of specialties they demand in the markets where they do business but today no full service law firm has offices in all 20, let alone the top 100, largest US legal markets,” said Elliott Portnoy, Global CEO of Dentons. “The innovative approach of Golden Spike will position us to do what no law firm has done before: create the first truly national US law firm.”

“Expanding our talent and capabilities in the US is all about our clients,” said Mike McNamara, CEO of Dentons US. “We must grow with our clients as their needs and priorities evolve. Clients are asking for more innovation, creativity, and responsiveness that is core to our firm across the US, and around the world. Through this new partnership, clients will gain access to even more talent and resources.”
