In December, Habitat for Humanity of Evansville plans to celebrate its 500th home built in Vanderburgh and Posey counties.
Of the more than 1,250 Habitat affiliates across the nation, only 25 have accomplished building 500 homes. Evansville’s organization will become the 26th.
At a news conference Thursday morning at Nazarene Baptist Church, Habitat’s 500th Home Celebration Task Force invited the community to join upcoming events leading up to the December home dedication.
Nazarene Baptist Church is in the neighborhood where the 500th home will be located, but a specific site has not been determined. The individual and/or family to live in the 500th house has not been selected.
The groundbreaking for the 500th home, a community build, is scheduled for Aug. 15 in the Ballard neighborhood. The specific site will be determined by the future homeowner once he or she reaches 150 volunteer hours of “sweat equity.”
The wall raising is set for September, according to a news release, followed by the home dedication in December.
